🔧 Selection, Torque & Anti-Loosening Guidance

  • Match the nut class to the bolt class. Never pair a Class 8 nut with a Grade 12.9 bolt — the nut will strip before the bolt reaches its full clamp load. A Grade 10.9 bolt requires a Class 10 nut minimum; Grade 12.9 requires Class 12.
  • Verify the thread standard and pitch. M10 coarse (1.5 mm) vs M10 fine (1.25 mm) are not interchangeable; metric vs UNC vs UNF mismatches will cross-thread on first assembly.
  • Apply controlled torque for target preload. Typical target is 75 % of bolt proof load. Use a calibrated wrench and the correct K-factor for your plating — zinc-plated K ≈ 0.20, plain / oiled K ≈ 0.15 to 0.18, PTFE-coated K ≈ 0.10.
  • Choose the right lock method for vibration & temperature. Nylon-insert lock nuts up to ~120 °C; all-metal deformed-top (DIN 980) for higher temperature and reusable service; two jam nuts for permanent joints; prevailing torque + thread-locking adhesive for high-cycle vibration; safety wire or cotter pin for aerospace, railway, and critical safety joints.
  • Install pronged tee nuts correctly. Pre-mark the position; place the four prongs on the timber face and tap with a hammer (or press with a bolt head) until the flange is flush. In hard woods (oak, beech, maple), drill a 6–8 mm pilot hole to prevent splitting. Lubricating the prongs with a light wax reduces installation force and improves bite.
  • Observe reuse rules. Most standards limit nylon-insert lock nuts to 5 reuse cycles before replacement; all-metal lock nuts may be reused until measured prevailing torque falls below specification. Stainless lock nuts are typically single-use to preserve galling resistance.
